ピノ・ノワールの造り手として今最も注目されているのがエド・カーツマン氏です。

エド・カーツマンの経歴はワイナリー名を見れば納得です。プレミアムワインの先駆者「シャローン」を経て、「テスタロッサ」ではワインメーカーとしてその実力を発揮し、多くの名誉に輝きました。その後も「フリーマン」「フォート・ロス」「オーガスト・ウエスト」で、さらにはあのピゾーニ・エステートと並び賞される「ロアー」のワインメーカーをシドゥーリのアダム・リーから引き継ぎました。

エド・カーツマンはワイン評論家やワイン愛好家のエンドユーザーから絶大な評価を受けているワインメーカーです。ロバート・パーカーのウェブサイトにある掲示板 Mark Squire’s Bulletin Boad で２００８年に行われた「Best Current Pinot Noir Winemaker in CA?」と題した投票では、カルト請負人のマーク・オベール（２位）、ブルゴーニュ初エノロジストのテッド・レモン（３位）、ルシアン・リヴァー・ヴァレーの大御所のトム・ロキオリ、数々のカルトワインを生み出したカリスマ・ワインメーカーのヘレン・ターリーに大きく差をつけて見事第１位に選ばれました。今カリフォルニアで最も注目を集めるピノ・ノワールのワインメーカーです。

エド・カーツマンのミドルネーム“サンドラー”の名を付けた彼自身のプライベート・ブランドがご紹介の「サンドラー」です。生産量も限られた数で、今まではメーリングリストの顧客だけへの販売でしたが、２０１０年に遂にキーファー・ランチ・ピノ・ノワールが日本初入荷しました。キーファー・ランチは、ルシアン・リヴァー・ヴァレーのサブ・アぺレーション、グリーン・ヴァレーに位置する銘醸畑です。一昨年のワインスペクテーター年間トップ１００の第１位に輝いたコスタ・ブラウン、ピノ・ノワールを愛しピノ・ノワールだけを生産するシドゥーリ、そしてファイラ、ローリング、フリーマンなどのトップ生産者のみに葡萄は供給されています。

エドさんは２０１０年３月に初来日。昨年３月に２度目の来日を果たされました。もちろん２回ともツーショットの記念撮影ございます（笑）・・・

キーファー・ランチは、ルシアン・リヴァー・ヴァレーのサブ・アぺレーション、グリーン・ヴァレーに位置する銘醸畑です。一昨年のワインスペクテーター年間トップ１００の第１位に輝いたコスタ・ブラウン、ピノ・ノワールを愛しピノ・ノワールだけを生産するシドゥーリ、そしてファイラ、ローリング、フリーマンなどのトップ生産者のみに葡萄は供給されています。その中でもキーファー・ランチのオーナーの一番のお気に入りのワインメーカーがエド・カーツマンです。またキーファー・ランチを最も知り尽くすのがやはりエド・カーツマンです。

２０１１年はカリフォルニアにとって厳しい年で例年より気温が低い年でした。テイスティング済みですが、その分非常にエレガントな味わいになっていると思います。みずみずしいチェリーやラズベリーの華やかな赤黒い果実味で、果実味、酸、タンニンのバランスがとれた魅力的なピノ・ノワールです。

ブルゴーニュ・ファンの方にも是非お飲みいただきたいサンドラーのキーファー・ランチです。

The unusual growing season of 2011 for California Pinot Noir farmers started after a normal winter with average rainfall. In early to mid April we saw several days of frost which reduced the number of shoots on the vines. As soon as the frost worries were over, it started raining again. Just when it looked like our typical four months of dry weather were underway, long range forecasts predicted a significant rain event in late June. It’s not out of the ordinary to see very light rain or drizzle in the summer months, but not measurable rainfall in coastal California. It turned out to be the third rainiest June in California since records have been kept since 1849.

Even after the rains finally ended and we were into July, we experienced the second year in a row of cold, foggy, windy days with virtually no afternoon sunshine. Veraison started very late because of the lack warmth and sun, and the 2011 season was heading for September with a long way to go for physiological ripeness in the fruit. Then of course the threat of rain appeared again. Luckily, we avoided any major storms at Keefer, and with patience and good luck, Marcy and Craig harvested some excellent fruit for Sandler on September 30.

The 2011 Sandler Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir is a one clone Pinot Noir, and and that is clone 23, a Swiss clone also known as Mariafeld. The clone 23 clusters are larger and more loosely bunched than most other Pinot clones. It also produces wines with bright acidity, deep berry flavors and often times fragrant, floral aromas. This 2011 has all of these attributes and is very similar to the 2010 Sandler Keefer. It is starting to drink well in early 2013 and should be at its height of enjoyment sometime after 2016.

ロアーは、ピゾーニ・エステートのゲーリー・ピゾーニとは竹馬の友であるゲーリー・フランシオーニが所有するブランドです。２人の名前から付けられたゲーリーズ・ヴィンヤードと、奥様の名前を付けたロゼラズ・ヴィンヤードなどを所有します。ゲーリーズは、ラ・ターシュ・クローンのピゾーニ・ヴィンヤードから誕生しました。

ロアーのゲーリーズは日本初入荷です！ピゾーニ・クローン（元々はラ・ターシュから）のゲーリーズから。１００％フレンチオーク（７３％新樽）にて１１ヶ月熟成。樽は、レイモンド、フランソワ・フレール、エルミタージュ、ラトゥールです。１度のラッキング、アンフィルター＆アンファインにてボトリング。生産量は６１４ケースです。ワイン・エンスージアスト誌で９０点獲得。（ちなみに２００９年ロアー・ゲーリーズはＷＡ９３点でした・・・）

Roar is another small, family-owned winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands turing out gorgeous Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Headed by Gary and Rosella Francioni, Roar makes a number of intense, perfumed wines that stand out for the purity of their fruit.

The 2010 Pinot noir Garys’ wraps around the palate with dark red cherries, spices
and flowers, all of which convey an impression of richness and generosity. Layers of fruit flow through effortlessly to the juicy, flavorful finish. The Garys’ is riper and more forward in its aromas and flavors than some of the other wines in the lineup. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.

The entry-level 2010 Pinot Noir is exuberant, flashy and flat-out delicious. Juicy dark cherries, spices and a hint of French oak jump from the glass. This extroverted Pinot will be a great early drinker. The pure fleshiness of the fruit is absolutely irresistible. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate #202 –

２００２年にゲーリー・フランシオーニ、ハワード・グラハム、エド・カーツマンのパートナーシップによりスタートした「オーガスト・ウエスト」でもワインメーカーを務めます。

グラハムのクローンは、６６７、７７７、スワンです。１００％フレンチオーク（６０％新樽）にて熟成です。ロゼラズのクローンは、６６７、１１３、ピゾーニです。１００％フレンチオーク（５８％新樽）にて熟成。ワインライター葉山孝太郎氏はこの２００９年ロゼラズについて「ミュジニーよりセクシーでリーズナブル」とコメントしました。ちなみに２００７年（ピノ・リポート９６点）については「オーガスト・ウエストは品があって官能的。リシュブールに対するカリフォルニアの答えが、これだ。」とコメントしました。

サンタ・ルシア・ハイランズ・ピノ・ノワールは、８２％ロゼラズ、１８％がゲーリーズです。偉大な畑のブレンドがなんとレジョナル・ワインとなっています。１００％フレンチオーク（２５％新樽）にて熟成。この２０１０年からラベルが変わりました。

August West is a partnership between Gary Francioni, Ed Kurtman and Howard Graham. The wines are delicate, see relatively low levels of new oak and are bottled without fining and filtration. Most of the wines are made from Francioni’s Rosella’s Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, but I have included notes on the Russian River bottlings for ease of reference.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Graham Family Vineyard wafts from the glass with all sorts of flowers, sweet herbs, tobacco and red cherries. It is a feminine, understated Pinot that impresses for its delicate, mid-weight personality and fabulous overall harmony. The lingering, floral finish is quite beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

The 2009 Pinot Noir Rosella’s shows great focus and depth in its ripe red fruit, rose petals, freshly cut flowers and spice. Tabacco, licorice and sweet floral notes wrap around the delicate, polished finish. The Rosella’s reveals a touch more oak influence than the straight Santa Lucia Highlands bottling. The main clones are 113, 667 and Pisoni. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2016. – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #196 –

最後に余談ですが・・・

お話しましたように、２０１０年３月にエド・カーツマン氏が初来日。ちなみに彼女とご一緒で。エド・カーツマン氏は浅草・浅草寺で彼女にポロポーズしたとのことです。あれ、これ秘密だったかな。繊細なピノ・ノワールを造り上げる男はやることが粋ですね（笑）。
